I love doing school and library visits, but am changing my approach this year. I now do a short introductory talk, read some of my poems and picture books, and answer as many questions as kids, teachers and librarians come up with.
The length of my visit depends on the number of questions --teachers and librarians are especially encouraged to ask them! Questions can concern writing techniques and habits, book publishing and production, creativity, questions about my individual books, about how I got started, what my life is like, etc. I have handouts for teachers and librarians consisting of book lists and writing exercises. If you have a book sale, I will stay as long as needed to autograph.
I meet with PreK through 6th grade, and with adults. I can do up to four groups a day, with up to 50 children per group. I charge $500 a day. I can visit schools throughout Connecticut, in south central and south western Massachusetts, and in areas of New York State that adjoin western Connecticut. Once in a while, I'll go farther.
